Trend Spring Summer 2010- Maxi Dress

The Maxi dress is not only a huge trend this summer but personally I think a very practical one.  They can be worn at anytime of day and at almost at any event simply by changing how you accessorize them.  We have seen them on the runway from Lanvin, Sass & Bide and of course DVF.

I love how casual and versatile the maxi dress can be.  And the best part is no matter what your personal style you can find one that will work for you.  Here you see the gamut from country queen to the bohemian beauty.

How are you wearing your maxi dresses?  I like mine with flat sandals, a long necklace and a long sweater.  Send us some photos of you in your Maxi dress for our new reader's in trends post.

Nashville Weekend Sales - July 22-25

If you're willing to brave this Nashville summer heat this weekend, we've got a few sales for you.

You know those bonus bucks you racked up a few weeks ago at whats-in-store?  Now through Sunday is your time to cash those babies in!  And there's still plenty of time to wear your favorite summer jewelry, so why not pick up a few more pieces?!  This weekend you can buy 3 and get 1 free on summer clearance items.

Two Elle's summer sale is in full swing!  You never know what our favorite rabbit, Rachel, is going to mark down, so this is one sale you definitely don't want to miss.

This is the last weekend to get your free ticket to the GoldenAge of Couture exhibit at the Frist.  All you have to do is spend $100 at The Cosmetic Market, Private Edition or Therapy Systems.  Let's face it, spending $100 at any of these stores isn't difficult.  It's like Target...you go in needing toothpaste and walk out with a head-to-toe outfit, lunch and no toothpaste...not that I know anything about doing that. ;)

Don't forget to spend some time with our favorite GG's, Kim and Tanya this weekend!  The Goodbuy Girls are our July Spotlight store and they have a special Stella reader offer for you, but you need to be on our email list to get your coupon.   If you're not signed up, head to the top of the blog and you'll see the sign up in the side bar.

MORE SALES ADDED:
It's barely the weekend and we already have sales to add!

Nashville Clothing Company is having a buy one item get one item 1/2 off sale this weekend at their Gulch and Cool Springs locations.

H. Audrey in the Hill Center has all of their handbags marked 30% off.

Parlour Vintage Clothing at the GasLamp Antique Mall has all belts, bags and shoes marked 20% off through the weekend.

Online, Sabrosa Vintage is celebrating two years on Etsy by offering 25% off everything in the store through Monday, July 26.

Feedback Clothing on Belmont has all of their jeans on sale for $25 including IT jeans and Jedidiah for men.  They also have some great clearance items.

Humankind in East Nashville has a Summer Sale in full swing.  Take $1 off all tanks and shorts and $2 off all t-shirts.

Our favorite liquidator, UAL on West End, is offering 10% off your entire purchase today, July 23 through Sunday, July 25.

Blush Boutique on Harding Pike (in front of the new Publix by the White Bridge intersection) is having a Christmas in July sale through Sunday, July 25.  Take 15% off all Fall arrivals, 30-80% off all other clothing in the store and take 40% off summer shoes.

What's in the Bag? - Mizzie

Alrighty,  here is my "What's in the Bag?" post.  I must admit I feel like Carla's "What's in the Bag?" post is a tough one to follow.  I was tempted to throw in a few more items to make this handbag expose a little more interesting, but then I decided to go with "honesty is the best policy" instead.  Having just returned from London about a week ago my purse is a little more clean and organized than normal.  Purses are something I do not travel with so this beautiful Italian bag sits in my closet patiently waiting for my return.  It kinda feels like Christmas every time I get back and have my small collection of bags waiting for me.

This one entered my life after a very successful trip to TJ Maxx.  I love how 70's it is!  When I bought it it was missing two of the gold rings that hold the shoulder straps on and I managed to get an extra 30% off the already 60% price.  Woohoo!!

Thank God for the Internet.  I found a website that does handbag supplies and found these gate rings that fit the bag perfectly.  I think they cost me $2.50.  Again woohoo!!!

Now for the good stuff.  Most days I try to carry around business cards in case I need to sell myself to anyone. The random cold medicine was hiding in an inside pocket, not sure why it was there, probably left over from a winter cold.  Recently I started craving ice cream, like on a daily basis, hence the Lactaid to avoid the horrible side effects of not being able to digest dairy.  My favorite is an M & M sonic blast.  Yummy goodness.

This GPRS has literally changed my life.  I take it with me to London as well and OMG has it made my life easier.  I am sure it has saved me from a stomach ulcer.  The Lumix is always with me as my digital memory maker.  I mean really my memory is not that great so having this little memory keeper with me makes me feel better.

I bought these Stella Sunglasses for my trip to Miami and I am so glad I did.  I feel like such a rock star when I wear them and the lenses are amazing.  No more squinting in the sun for me.  Now, do I really need to carry that many lipsticks?  The sad part is they are all almost the same color. I do love having my Histoires de Parfums samples with me, I should probably break down and buy a bottle one day.  I just can't decide which one I like the best.  My wallet tends to be the heaviest thing in my bag.  English pound coins, I mean who thought those were a good idea they weigh at least a pound each and every time I use cash they give me coins instead of notes. Thanks a lot!

So that's what's in my bag.  Hope you enjoyed it.  If I did this after being here a month you would most likely see a few pens and a lot more trash and a note book.  I know Carla felt she had too much in her bag, but I am a fan of the bag within a bag within a bag.  Ever since High School I have carried my life with me in some form of backpack, bag or purse.  I just read the other day that little purses are back in fashion, and my heart skipped a beat....how will we edit our lives enough to fit them into small handbags?

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion - Dyeing Suede Shoes

Remember these shoes? From this post?

I loved them when I purchased them but I never wore them.  I noticed it was the color and a few light water spots that kept them from my feet.  As much as I have tried, I just do not like red.  I have given the color many chances, but for some cosmic reason red and I are not and probably will not ever be buddies.

Since the shape of the shoes is so gorgeous I decided to try my hand at some DIY fashion dyeing.  I've never dyed suede before so I googled "dyeing suede" and came up with this Fiebing's Suede Dye.  You can find it on a few different websites including ebay

The application is simple and straight forward.  Because my shoes were a lighter color I knew I would most likely not be able to get them to a dark black so I settled for a lighter almost purple black.  I ended up doing 4 layers of dye.

When they had totally dried I used a the cap of a sueded cleaner to lift the nap that was flattened by the liquid color.

The result is pretty nice, but I think that I will need to do another coat before I wear them out.

Tip 1:  The dye is very runny so watch out for the edges and soles of the shoes.  I ended up dyeing the bottom of mine because I had a bit of run over.

Tip 2: I also used this dye to give new life to my old UGG's. It's amazing what a new coat of color will do for over worn lack luster black suede.

Happy Modifying

Stella Spotlight: Nashville Boutiques - Goodbuy Girls

I see a few lazy Saturday afternoons in Mizzie and my future spent hanging out on the couch at the Goodbuy Girls  sifting through all of their fabulous finds.  Neatly merchandised in this cozy space on N. 16th Ave in East Nashville is a pretty amazing selection of designer vintage and contemporary resale apparel, accessories, shoes and boots.  I spent a Saturday morning with GG's Tanya Coe and Kim Davison talking vintage and learning what makes up the GG's fabulous aesthetic.

We love the name Goodbuy Girls. How did it evolve and what has been your best buy/find this year?
Our boyfriends are in a band, (of course, this is Nashville right?) The Branded Sons, and they have a song called "Goodbye Girls" that we've probably heard 500+ times, so it was a spin off of that. Our best good buys this year are probably any pair of over-the-knee boots.  We have had vintage Italian red leather 5 inch stacked heeled ones, a Stella McCartney canvas and Vegan-friendly pair and an Amanda Smith black suede over the knee flat boots which you can currently find in-store and on-line.  They make any GG (Goodbuy Girl) look tough as nails. (Psst...click on the Goodbye Girls link above for a free music download!)

What made you decide to finally open a store?
The answer to this question varies depending on who is asking.  Sometimes the answer is Tanya's mom's hidden closet full of vintage stage clothes, embellished cowboy boots and suede fringe jackets.  Sometimes the answer is that we wanted something of our own to do while our boyfriends were having band practice (Sister's Doing It For Themselves a la Annie Lenox), also the books, How To Make A Living Without A Job by Barbara Winter and My Life and Other Unfinished Business by Dolly Parton were very helpful, but mainly, this is something we both have been passionate about for a long time and we were ready to make it happen!  It's now or never.

Describe the vibe of your store in four words.
Cozy, relaxed, Dolly, Americana

If you had a mascot for your store what would it be?
A wild mustang

What is your favorite era of vintage clothing?
The Woodstock Era - Awesome styles, but also because that's when you could finally do whatever you wanted in fashion and go to the grocery store in it.

What three items should we all be hunting for this summer?
Native American style Jewelry (Beaded, Turquoise, Coral)
Modified Vintage Tees with fringe and beads
The perfect pair of Vintage Cowboy Boots with a boot-kerchief

Let's talk about the cowboy boots.  We see at least a few pairs a week on your blog and you have quite a collection in the store.  What are your favorite ways to wear them?
There's only one thing you're not allowed to say in the store, "I can't wear cowboy boots."  Everyone can wear them - with skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, shorts - no excuses.  Every GG deserves to have one cool pair!

There is such a variety of items in the store.  We talked about how you find a lot of them when you travel to small towns.  Is it hard to edit everything when you get back and decide which items actually make it into the store?
We are very selective on the front end, especially since we are a small store, no room for fillers.

When vintage shopping, are there any tips you can give our readers on how to spot a "good buy"?
Look for high quality, well-made and hand-made items, genuine fabrics, vibrant patterns, embellishments, etc.

What are five of your favorite places in Nashville?
1. Manuel's Studio- We stop by to say "hi" and end up staying for 5 hours pretending like we work there.  It's fun.
2. Brown's Diner- It's classy like us and there's only one beer on tap which reduces our risk of consumer anxiety
3. Robert's Western World- when we want to get our honky tonk on. They always have live hillbilly, rockabilly and classic country music playing and their veggie burger is exceptional.
4. R Squared Salon- Hair Ecstasy!  They have custom mixed organic oil and aromatherapy hair treatments that will make you not want to get out of the wash chair, and a blown-out style that will have you sporting a whole new attitude.
5. Lauren Wray's Backporch on the East Side- it's kind of like our tree/club house where we girls check in with each other.  Neil Young on the record player, pizza from Italia and cheap red wine.

What inspires you?
All the amazing people we get to meet in our everyday adventures!  Whether it's a GG customer who is kicking ass on a non-profit project to help the community, the fabulous classy Golden GG's who supply us with vintage goods or the local merchants who have taken us under their wings because they believe in us.  We don't think these people know how much of what they are doing truly inspires, motivates and helps us. We're going to have a party for them one day soon. You're totally on the invite list Stella!

We can't wait for the party!  Make sure you visit the Goodbuys Girls this month and if you receive Stella emails, you will have a sweet little deal in your Inbox very soon.  You should also check out the GG's blog and follow them on Twitter.  They post special items all the time, so you have no excuse to miss out on all of this fabulousness.

Happy Hours, Sales & Other Happenings This Week

Rather than start a brand new sale blog, I thought it might be easier to keep everything all together and just update Sunday's post.  So here goes...scroll through and check out all the new additions!

------------
My cold medicine-induced haze basically prohibited me from posting anything last week, including a weekend sale and event blog.  Sorry about that!  As luck would have it, there are actually a few things coming up this week that you should know about, so here's a bonus sale blog for you.  We'll be back on our regular schedule soon and should be posting our July Spotlight Store any day now.  It's another good one (of course!) and there's a hint for you at the end of this post.

Tuesday, July 13 is Booze-day Tuesday at the Franklin whats-in-store.  Grab a cocktail between 4-7pm and check out the best summer trends and upcoming fall must-haves.  All scarves will be 50% off and take $10 off all necklaces.

It's also Bonus Buck time.  For every $30 you spend (before tax) between now and July 18, you'll receive $5 in bonus bucks.  You can redeem that bonus cash on your purchases from July 19-25.

The party continues this Thursday, July 15 from 6-9pm at the Edgehill Village store's Anniversary Party.  50% off all scarves and $10 of all necklaces and enjoy cocktails, munchies and music!  Sale prices will be offered all day at the Edgehill store, so if you can't make it to the party stop by during the day.

The sale continues at Monkee's in the Hill Center.  Stop by tomorrow from 4-7pm for their VIP event.

Have you been to the Golden Age of Couture Exhibit at the Frist yet?  If not, GET THERE!  I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it is.  The Cosmetic Market is giving you the opportunity to see the exhibit for free this week!

Also at the Cosmetic Market this weekend is a Mineral Makeup event.

I've been talking about the Cotton Mill Lifestyle sale for weeks now and it's finally nearing it's end.

Big news this week from our lovely friend Carmen of Closet Case Vintage.  She is opening her very own store inside Katy K's Ranch Dressing on 12th Ave South!  You'll find Carmen's usual array of amazing dresses, tops and skirts, but she's also going to feature a selection of vintage jeans, t-shirts and accessories for men.

When you're finished at Closet Case, head over to Local Honey and congratulate Shea, because Local Honey turns 5 this weekend!  (And wish Shea a happy belated birthday too!)

Is that enough for your "to-do" list this weekend?  I hate I'm missing out on all of this, but don't be surprised if you have a Mizzie sighting.  She's finally back in town!  Yay!

As promised, here is your musical Spotlight hint to download...

Any guesses on who our July Spotlight Store is?  That cat is out of the bag!  It's the Goodbuy Girls in East Nashville.  Visit them this weekend and make sure you receive our Stella emails to get your special GG offer.

Happy Shopping!
