Jewelry designer, Freshie & Zero has listed a number of items on her Etsy site.  50% of all Etsy sales during May will go to flood relief efforts.

Through the end of May, Troubadour Vintage will donate 30% of each purchase to flood relief.

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion - Short Dress

My Mom loves second hand shopping.   She recently purchased this Warehouse dress from a local charity shop for me.  Unfortunately the dress was a skosh too small.  Fortunately I like to modify things.  Here is my solution to a dress that has a waste line that is either too small or too high or both.  

The Dress 

Step One:  There are two ways to do this modifies.  One - Just cut the dress into two pieces at the top of the skirt.  You will have some fraying from the raw edges, but if you don't want to sew this is a quick and easy way to separate the dress.  Two - This one requires a sewing machine or a local seamstress (dry cleaners also usually offer an alteration service).  Using a seam ripper rip out the seam between the top and the skirt of the dress. 

Step Three:  Once the dress is separated then you will want to pin the edges in preparation for sewing. 

Step Four: Sew the edges with a medium sized stitch. 

Step Five:  Style your new skirt and vest.  

This turned out even better than I expected.  You may have noticed that there was a button missing at the waist.  To be honest the waist of this skirt is still a little too small, so I just put a wide belt on which I think is a great addition to the look and I don't have to worry about finding a button or feeling like someone is squeezing my stomach all day. Yay!

I am also thinking about changing the buttons if I can find some I like.  I think some black ones might be nice.

Weekend Artisan Fair, Vintage Shows & an Amazing Denim Sale

It's shaping up to be a fantastic weekend of events and sales so I'm going to spare you my commentary and just get to it!

Okay, well just a little bit of commentary.  Definitely put Edgehill Village on your list of places to stop by on Saturday.  Visit Nest Interiors Facebook page for a sneak peek at some of the amazing vendors who will be there, including Colleen Gonce Whitver, who repurposes vintage jewelry.  Her jewelry is beautiful and I bought my 1970s DvF necklace from her back in February.

I need to stay strong on this one.  I really don't need a new pair of jeans, but I always have good luck at the Cotton Mill's denim sales.  I've bought several pairs of Seven for all Mankind and Paige jeans here, all for well under $100.  I will try my best to resist the urge...(maybe)...but you should definitely go and tell me all about the awesome denim deals you got.

Trend - The Comeback of the Clog Update

Remember that time I was talking about clogs and how I was not sure I really liked them?  Especially the real true clog kind of like the Chanel ones from the runway?  Yeah?  Well I have a confession to make.  Today, I went out and bought two pairs of clogs eerily similar to the Chanel ones I said I didn't like.  Man those pesky trends have foiled me again!!!  

Now I am asking for your help.  I bought two because I could not make the decision in the store and I have deep rooted mistrust of sales people. They're all full of lies with the sole purpose of separating you from your money. I need you to help me decide which ones to keep.  They both have a 14 day return policy so I need to know what you think in the next week.  Please?!?!?!

Clog #1  Jeffrey Campbell Charlie Clog

I love love love the look of this shoe and for such a high heel it is surprisingly comfortable.  The heel strap is a nice addition and can be worn over the front or on the heel like in this photo.  My biggest problem with these shoes is that they are more of a statement shoe that I really won't be able to wear on a daily basis and they are kinda clunky when walking on a hard surface.  P.S. I really like these. 

Clog #2  Bertie Ss Sandy

Ok these are super comfy, they have a padded cork sole and the heel height is perfect for walking around in all day.  My issue with these is that they are a little bit hard to keep on.  I have been walking around the flat in them and if I am not really paying attention they kinda fly off my feet.  Not really conducive to walking around a dirty city.  I am wondering if they will fit better as they loosen up the more I wear them. P.S. I really like these too. What do I do??

Trend - The Comeback of the Clog

Traditionally when we think of clogs we think of Heidi, nurses in ill fitting white scrubs, and Dr. Schols.  After this season I predict when we hear the word clog we will think of Chanel, Karl Largerfield, Alexa Chung, and The Olsen Twins.  If there is a must have accessory list for spring the clog is in the top 5.  Seen on the runways of Prada, Chanel, Alice Roi, and Louis Vuitton and on the streets worn by celebrities and fashion forward females everywhere. Dress 'em up dress 'em down you can where clogs all over town!! Sorry I got a little carried away there.  Breath....Ok I am back. 


When I first saw this trend on Alexa Chung I was like "Gross!  I will not be wearing those ugly wooden soled clunkers! And P.S. Alexa STOP slouching!"  then I thought "Wait....(eyebrow raise, upward finger point) this might be one of those trends that I will see so much it will grow on me and in a few months I will be wearing some version of these ugly wooden soled clunkers." And.....I was right.  I don't see myself wearing the Chanel style clog but I am a fan of the more sandal style open toed clogs we are seeing from Sigerson Morrison and Jeffrey Campbell.

Pucker Up Buttercup

I'm a lip balm junkie plain and simple.  I've had some mild anxiety attacks not being able to find the right tube or tin of lip balm in my purse.  It's a problem.  I'm aware of this.  But there's something about those little tubes and pots of moisturizing goodness.  They taste good, they smell good and well, they're pretty much my adult security blanket.  I could have worse vices, right? 

My addiction started several years ago with a pot of Smith's Rosebud Salve.  This salve was an impulse buy while waiting in line to check out at an Anthropologie.  Now it's my go-to lip balm.  I've tried dozens since and I always come back.  I have two on-going complaints about it however, one is no SPF and the other is that it literally liquefies in the tin if it gets warm.  This makes for a really messy lip balm that's not the best for the summer.  But I can't quit you Rosebud Salve.  Other balms may make it into my bag, but there will always be one goopy Rosebud tin in there too.

Although still no SPF, my other lip balm obsession is the Green Wagon's Chocolate Peppermint Lip Balm from Good Fortune Soap Company.  Good Fortune is based in Athens, Tenn. and make a lot of other yummy products, but that lip balm is the perfect blend of flavors.  It's also a tiny bit exfoliating yet it's very moisturizing.  

Mizzie loves Babybearshop's All the Better to Kiss you With.  I like the Babybearshop because it is all natural and feels so soft on my lips.  The cases are so super cute, they get complimented when I pull one out of my wallet to moisturize my dry lips.  If I want an on the go lip balm that doesn't require a finger for application, I like the Kiss My Face in a stick.  It has such a nice texture and is dense enough to really coat my lips and it soaks in to leave them ready to kiss.

I agree with Mizzie on the Kiss My Face balm.  We received a trio of these lip balms in our Naked Without Us goody bags.  I've been using the Vanilla Honey and it does coat your lips nicely and it has SPF 15!  The other nice thing about Kiss My Face is the price.  On their website, tubes are $3.49 and the trio is $9.99.

After coming off of a week of amazing fashion shows at Naked Without Us, we decided to ask a few of our NWU favorites what their lip balm of choice is...

The Kiss My Face is my current favorite too because it is all natural and CRUELTY FREE!  No animal ingredients and testing which just makes me overuse it more and more.  The flavors are great and my lips feel moisturized instantly.

Another good choice is Nivea Lip Care, A Kiss of Moisture - Hydrating Lip Care.  I was skeptical because this product was so inexpensive (around $2.50) and I assumed it would be waxy, but it applies very smoothly.  It has a clean scent and I even apply a thin base coat before I apply lipstick or heavy glosses.  (This product is not Vegan, but they don't test on animals.)

I am devoted to three lip balms!

1. ChapStick "True Shimmer" peppermint rush.  It is frosty blue.  I swear it makes me look fashionably hypothermic.

2. Lip Smacker in Dr. Pepper flavor.  'Nuff said.

3. Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer - Champagne shade.  It's a lovely frosty pink and gets me compliments every time.

I've become addicted to Smith's Minted Rose Lip Balm.  I first picked it up at Sephora when I was visiting New York.  It was one of those impulse purchases.  They stick all those little items near the register to get you to buy more things when you're waiting in line.  I've been hooked ever since.  It's minty and slightly tinted.  It gives your lips a slight shine and looks great over lipstick too.  I was happy to find it now at Cosmetic Market across from my work in Hillsboro Village.

I'm not really a lip gloss kind of girl, but I do love my lip balm.  I alternate between good old Burt's Bees (because it makes your lips feel all tingly and minty fresh) and my other favorite is Smith's Rosebud Salve in rosebud or strawberry! I adore their vintage style packaging in little tins, and they can be used on hands too - great for dry cuticles!

Rosebud Salve ended up being a nearly unanimous favorite here.  It is a great product and Kallie's right about using it for dry cuticles.  It does work great.  I've found all the Smith's Salve products at a variety of places in town including UAL, Cosmetic Market, Sephora and Anthropologie.  

Thanks ladies!  Between all of us, we have some very moisturized lips happening here.

I read on Hands on Nashville's Twitter feed (@HONashville) today that from May 2 through today, 11,401 people have volunteered approximately 48,460 hours of their time for flood related opportunities organized by HON.  And in ten days, HON volunteers have made a projected economic impact of $1 million.  Incredible!  Clean up is still going on which means volunteers are still needed.  To sign up or for more information visit www.hon.org.
