We really want to know. Send us your photos! Several fantastic Halloween parties are planned at local boutiques Friday night, so get those costumes ready!  I saw some pretty hilarious ones on the Office tonight (Jim's "Book Face") and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (The Birdmen).

Start your afternoon at the Clothing Xchange in Hillsboro Village for Haunt Couture, then head over to Venus and Mars Vintage on Belmont for Through the Looking Glass (with treats from Peace, Love, Tea, Cupcake Collection and drinks from The Patterson House...yum!) and then end your night in Wonderland at Two Elle in the Hill Center for TenThirtyONine featuring Newmatic and Laura Sweeney.  I'd have a hard time choosing between these, so I think you should make the rounds and hit them all!

Belmont Mansion Fashion Show this Thursday

Thursday night's 30th Annual Belmont Mansion Fashion Show kicks off the first of many events happening around Nashville this weekend.  The Get in Fashion event at Uptown 162 (across from the Standard Restaurant) will feature two 30-minute fashion shows. The first show will feature Dallas designer, Abi Ferrin, and the second will feature local favorite, Posh Boutique.  Music will be provided by DJ Dale Carver and several local businesses including Frothy Monkey, Twist Art Gallery, Adelicia's Boutique and Posh will be set up in a marketplace area so you can sip and shop your way through the event.

General Admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets, which include a front row seat, are $40. To reserve your tickets call Kate Wilson at the Belmont Mansion at 615-460-5459.

Mizzie Modifies: DIY Fashion - Boot Bling

For the last couple of months, I have been on the look out for a new pair of winter boots.  I wanted something with a heel, leather, tall and fantastic.  I had noticed that a lot of the boots I was drawn to were adorned with what I like to call boot bling.  So I added boot bling to my new boot criteria.  As with most of my "i know exactly what I want" shopping trips, I failed to find what I was looking for at a price I could justify.  Then one afternoon, standing in the middle of Selfridges Shoe department in London, surrounded by Gucci, prada and Miu Miu, I had an epiphany.  Why don't I buy the boots I can afford, then modify them by adding some bling myself?  That day I bought some wicked boots, took them home and put them on, then booted up my computer and began my search.   What I was looking for were boot straps.  Still don't know what they were originally for, but I love them!  I mean come on, if I live in Nashville I should take advantage of the cowboy gear at some point.

Step One:  Buy some kick ass boots.

Step Two: Find some boot straps.  I bought mine from a Nashville shop called Mr. Tips.  Mine were $30.

Step Three: Put your boot straps on your boots.

Tip: The boot straps come with a chain that goes under your boot.  I removed this, because the chains were kinda heavy and loud when I walked.

Step Four:  Try them on all your boots.  Have fun!!!

Step Five:  Buy more boot straps.  I am getting these next.

MIzzie Modifies: DIY Fashion - Dyeing Leather Shoes

Have you ever fallen for a pair of boots because they were wearing a flirty little tag that said 50% off?  I know the sticker seems harmless enough, but when it's attached to a shoe you may or may not like, suddenly that boot becomes like Cinderella's glass slipper.  It whispers to you "Buy me.  Buy me now.  If you leave me here someone else will take advantage of this fabulous offer.  Think of all the money you are saving.  I will change your life."  What the shoe does not tell you is that you might not ever wear it, and even if it is discounted, if you don't buy it you are saving the most money.

So for all you bargain buyers out there here is an idea that might turne those glass slippers taking up room in your never big enough closet into actual wearable shoes fine enough to wear in the real world.


Item: A pair of dark green leather zip front boots purchased on sale 3 years ago.
Last time worn in current form: I have not worn these shoes for almost 2 years.

Modified: I am still amazed at how easy and quick this process was.  Using a leather and nubuck dye, I dyed the boots and then polished them.  And Voila!  New black boots.  I love the zip on the front of the boot since zippers are so hot right now.

How to:  The dyeing process is super simple.  You just take a cloth or the applicator inclosed in the box and just wipe the dye onto leather until is saturated.  I would let it dry and do a second coat for safety.  Then follow with a shoe cream in the same color to set the dye and keep it from bronzing.

Tip: Use a rolled up magazine to stand the boot up while drying.

        

Huge Third Thursday planned this week at Edgehill Village

 

This week's Third Thursday at Edgehill Village is shaping up to be the biggest one yet! This is a fantastic opportunity to check out what all the great boutiques at Edgehill have to offer.  This month's block party will support several charitable organizations too.  There will be a Red Cross Blood Drive from 2-7:30pm and EyeCandy Salon will be giving "pink extensions" for donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Next Big Nashville Rummage Sale Today!

Stella Spotlight: Nashville Boutiques - Nashville Clothing Company

A few weeks ago, Mizzie and I stopped by Nashville Clothing Company to talk with owner, Tiffany Lewis. Tiffany’s friendly demeanor and classic style definitely translates into the inviting, green-apple walled boutiques she runs in the Gulch and Cool Springs.

How has the store evolved since you first opened?

When we first opened on West End, the store had more of an Urban Outfitters feel. As I became more involved, I wanted to skew it a little more feminine and definitely wanted it to be a friendly, fun environment. I didn’t want this store to be off-putting. I wanted it to be a place where people were comfortable coming in to hang out. I also wanted it to be a very price-balanced boutique. There is a stigma that boutique stores are expensive. I approached it from a view of “what are some of the things I would buy on a regular basis.” Most items in the store are under $100. I also thought it was important to support local designers. With the exception of our African jewelry, all the jewelry in the store is from local designers. We even carry a line of boots that are made by a company based in Franklin.

How has location played into your success?

Moving to the Gulch has been great for us. There is such a sense of community here. Everyone supports everyone. And I have always wanted to expand the store and branch out into other cities. Cool Springs was a logical move since there aren’t many boutiques there. And there are very few men's boutiques.

What is the most versatile piece of clothing in the store?

Probably the Gentle Fawn military jacket and our crooked V tee shirts which come in five colors. Either of these can be easily dressed up or down. Also, our plaid hoodies are a good “go to” item. Grunge is coming back, but this time it’s a little more tailored. Our plaid shirts look great with jeans or leggings.

(I’ve secretly been thinking about this Gentle Fawn jacket since we left the store that evening. I love the off-center zipper and that it’s slightly tailored at the waist which gives it a nice shape.)

What are some of your favorite clothing or accessory pieces in the store?

I love a lot of the pieces we carry that are by local designers. The Amy B denim high-waisted shorts and skirts are really cute. We’ve sold out of her dresses. Also, Liz Alig makes vintage inspired dresses out of recycled materials. We carry Amanda Valentine rings and her one-of-a- kind men’s ties. I also love our Keza jewelry. I saw this jewelry being made when I was in Africa this summer. I personally picked these pieces and brought them back with me.

What is your favorite or most special piece of clothing or accessory?

Right now, it’s definitely this blue beaded bracelet that’s part of the Keza jewelry line from Africa. This is a special line to me as I got to see first hand how this company gives women in Rwanda the opportunity to have control over their own lives.

When I’m looking for reasonably priced accessories, Nashville Clothing Company is one of my top picks. They also have a great selection of TOMS and Seychelles shoes and Goorin hats…all of which I love. Tiffany, Store Manager Natalie Rounion and the rest of the NCC staff are super nice and always happy to help, so stop by and say hello.

Swappity Swap Swap

See what happens when I drink coffee late in the afternoon? I make up words. Before the caffeine completely takes over my brain, I wanted to let you know about the clothes swap happening tomorrow at the Clothing Exchange in Hillsboro Village. Haute Swapping for a Cause benefits the YWCA Weaver Domestic Abuse Center. There are lots of fun activities planned during the swap and all attendees receive 20% off any Clothing Exchange purchases that evening.

You can drop off your clothes starting at 6pm. Donations can be bagged, but anything for the swap needs to be clean and on hangers. Swapping begins promptly at 7:30pm. So now's the time to hit the "I might wear this again" section of your closet, pick a few items and start swapping!
